Winpred tablets contain the active ingredient Prednisone, a synthetic Corticosteroid (glucocorticoid) that mimics the effects of naturally occurring hormones. While this product is labeled for human use, it is widely prescribed by veterinarians on an extra-label basis for numerous conditions in dogs, cats, and horses. Prednisone is a powerful medication used at different dosages to achieve two primary functions:
Anti-inflammatory: At lower doses, it reduces swelling, pain, and itching associated with allergies, arthritis, asthma, and inflammatory skin conditions.
Immune-suppressive: At higher doses, it suppresses an overactive immune system, treating serious conditions like autoimmune diseases and certain types of cancer.
Note for Cats and Horses: Prednisone requires conversion by the liver to its active form, prednisolone. Cats and horses are often less efficient at this conversion, so veterinarians may prefer to prescribe prednisolone directly to these species.
Active Ingredient: Prednisone (1 mg).
Approved Species (Original Licensing): Human.
Common Veterinary Species: Dog, Cat, and Horse (used extra-label).
Uses: Corticosteroid, Anti-inflammatory, Immune-suppressant, Hormone Replacement (for conditions like Addison's disease).
Form: Round, white, flat-faced with bevelled edge tablet, engraved ICN on one side and W1 on the other.
Route of Administration: Oral.
Prednisone is a prescription-only medication. A valid prescription from a licensed veterinarian is required for purchase. Due to the powerful nature of corticosteroids, including the risk of severe side effects (e.g., gastric ulcers, increased thirst/urination, and susceptibility to infection) and the danger of adrenal crisis if the medication is stopped abruptly, strict veterinary supervision with close monitoring and a mandatory tapering schedule is required.
